Mocktails - zero alcohol, mock co*cktails - are growing in popularity and with more restaurants featuring virgin drinks on their menus, the trend shows no sign of slowing down.

The best mocktail recipes create a refreshing drink. They're made with simple ingredients that create delicious drinks that aren't overly sweet or feel like a glass of juice. And they're definitely more complex than a sweet drink like a Shirley Temple.

Whether you're taking a break from alcohol for Dry January or Sober October, need to skip the liquor so you can feel good the next day, or simply don't enjoy drinking alcoholic beverages, you still deserve a delicious drink.

A fruity mocktail made with fresh herbs is my favorite because you can easily adjust the sweetness and flavors by simply swapping out the fruit or herb. They can be customized to each person's preference and are something the whole family can have fun making.

The base formula and recipes below skip the traditional, high-sugar mixers like orange juice, ginger beer, ginger ale, pineapple juice, tonic water, and cranberry juice. Instead we're creating non-alcoholic drinks based around homemade simple syrups, soda water, fresh herbs, and fresh citrus and fresh fruits.

My Go-To Mocktail Recipe Formula

In a tall glass or highball glass, place:

and
4-5 leaves of a fresh herb
and
2 oz fruit syrup.

Muddle everything together.

Add ice to fill the glass, then pour in:

4 oz sparkling water or club soda

Stir, sip and enjoy!

Making Homemade Simple Syrups

Head over to my homemade Simple Syrup page for the recipes and complete instructions on how to make just about any flavor of fruit syrup or sugar syrup.

Syrups are a key ingredient in these mocktail recipes that are easy to make yourself. Fruit syrups take only 10-15 minutes to make, but do need a couple hours of chill time, so you want to make them ahead of time.

Simple syrups last for 2-3 weeks in the refrigerator, so you can make your syrups days before you're planning on entertaining or sipping on your mocktails.

Frequently Asked Questions About Mocktails

What kind of sparkling water should I use?

These recipes were created for plain soda water, but sparkling water comes in all kinds of flavors so feel free to get creative! Berry and citrus sparkling water flavors are delicious in mocktails featured above and will enhance the flavor of your drink. If you're worried about combining flavors, just match the flavor of your sparkling water to the fruit or syrup flavor in your mocktail.

Are mocktails low calorie or low carb?

These mocktails are low in calories compared to a traditional co*cktail, making them a good choice if you’re keeping things low carb or low calorie. You can also use a sugar substitute when making the syrup to lower the calories even more.

How do I make these sweeter?

Want a sweeter sip? Increase the amount of simple syrup in the recipe, or for a super-sweet mocktail, swap the sparkling water for a lemon-lime soda.

How can I turn these mocktails into co*cktails?

Have some guests who want alcohol in their drinks? Replace 2 oz of soda water for 2 oz of vodka or rum to any of these recipes to make it a co*cktail.

What other kind of delicious mocktails can I make?

Let your taste buds be your guide and make up your own mocktail combinations! Take whatever fruit is in the fridge and whatever herbs are growing on the porch and get creative! Still stuck? I have lots of other mocktail recipes on my website. Just head over to my Mocktail Recipes page.
