2014: Bruno Mars & Chili Peppers
Plenty of Americans asked, "Who is Bruno Mars?" before the Pepsi Super Bowl XLVIII Halftime Show at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey, Feb. 2, 2014. But though Mars hadn't quite earned a Beyonce or Prince-level name yet, he proved that he could keep up with the Super Bowl's star power.
The multi-talented musician played an impressive drum solo on "Locked Out of Heaven" and sang with confidence as he and the Red Hot Chili Peppers performed together, rounding out the show with one of his top hits, "Just the Way You Are."

Prince brought the house down at the halftime show of the NFL's Super Bowl XLI football game between the Chicago Bears and the Indianapolis Colts in Miami, Florida, Feb. 4, 2007. He played an epic guitar solo on "Purple Rain" and remixed Bob Dylan's "All Along the Watchtower," Queen's "We Will Rock You" and Foo Fighters' "Best of You" with his own songs.

Uh oh: When Justin Timberlake sang, "gonna have you naked by the end of this song," America saw him tear off part of Jackson's costume, revealing her breast. The exposure during the nationally televised game cost the CBS a record $550,000 for violating indecency rules, U.S. communications regulators said Sept. 22, 2004.
One thing came out of the performance, though: the phrase "wardrobe malfunction."

2002: U2
It was a somber time, as this Super Bowl was the first after the 9/11 attacks of 2011.
Bono and U2 paid tribute to the national tragedy, playing "Where the Streets Have No Name" against a backdrop of names of the Sept. 11 victims. Bono opened his jacket to show the Stars & Stripes inside, making that halftime show a particularly patriotic one.

The Super Bowl halftime show as we know it all started with the King of Pop, making marching bands a thing of the past for the Super Bowl. Though the performance was not Jackson's best, with some off-kilter lip-syncing and a strange two-minute pause, all Super Bowl halftime shows have followed the spectacle format.
1992: Miami Sound Machine

Rival network Fox aired a special episode of "In Living Color" at the same time as the halftime show, drawing away millions of viewers.
