Hi Y'all,

Super new to this so howdy! Got 2 all in one bags going in which I inoculated with PE LC about 2 weeks ago. Looks like I have some solid mycelium growth on one of the bags.

Question to the group is when do you think the best time to "Break and Shake" is. The instructions say when the grain is about 30% colonized but over also read to not touch it until 100% of the grain section is colonized. Trying to be as patient as possible and not mess with it. 30% is fine but things aren't looking so good in there and if you don't ditch the heat mat you are going to cook anything that is in there, Heat the room not the bag.

you can break up and mix just the grain portion of the bag and then wait until it's fully colonized before mixing it all together.

Yss ditch the heat mat, if you room is 65°F-75°F you're good. Either wait until all the grain is colonized or if it's possible to shake only the grain around, that work perfectly, but I'm not too hopeful it can be done. Now that growth is really taking off it may be best to just wait. Maybe try tolling some of the grin portion around very carefully into more contact with the grain layer. If the Inoculant used wasn't MS, and a clean LC, you have a good shot at this working regardless. Never hurts to let the mycelium do its thing once it gets going strong.

One of my early mistakes was constantly shaking jars way too often. I learned years later this causes over stress and lead to contamination, indeed, back in the early days I had lots of green, all the time.

Thanks for the Advice! I just took off the heat matt and I think I'm just going to let it do its thing until it colonizes all the grain. I am a big gardener and I realized the more I messed with my garden - constant fertilizing, moving pots around, ect - the more my plants would die.

Also, I think the growth looks pretty good. I got very scared because the top right of the grain area looks like its turning very green. Funny enough its actually just the logo of the bag written on it in big green letters (it says the word bag in big green letters). Is there another reason to worry here? I'm obvi a noob but I think this looks good haha.

I'd say it looks bacterial, but that doesn't mean it won't fruit, I'd personally avoid shaking it.

The grain part looks ice creamy and covered in metabolites, but it could just be the pic

W8 for other opinions

All in One B+S Question - Mushroom Cultivation (2024)

FAQs

Do all-in-one mushroom grow bags work? ›

This bag was perfect, its small enough that it doesn't take up any space really. It holds all the steps that it takes to grow some okay quality shrooms. Also, the fact that it is all in one helps you from accidents and contamination that when you are growing from a box, it is harder to prevent that contamination.

When to fruit all in one grow bag? ›

Once colonization is complete, it's time for fruiting. To encourage fruiting in your all in one grow bag, cut or puncture holes in the bag for fresh air exchange. Place it in a bright location with high humidity. The mushrooms will then begin to form and mature within a few weeks.

What are the protocol for mushroom cultivation? ›

The six steps are Phase I composting, Phase II composting, spawning, casing, pinning, and cropping. These steps are described in their naturally occurring sequence, emphasizing the salient features within each step. Compost provides nutrients needed for mushrooms to grow.

What are the problems with mushroom cultivation? ›

Nematode problems are also becoming a limiting factor in the successful production of mushrooms, as nematicides recommemded abroad are not available in India. This problem needs attention specially. Presently there are no organised spawn-producing units, therefore spawn supply to growers is limited and uncertain.

When to break up all in one bag? ›

When the mycelium has grown three to four inches, without opening the bag, carefully break up the colonized substrate and mix it into the uncolonized substrate. This will dramatically speed up the colonization process.

Where to store all in one mushroom grow bag? ›

Store your all in one grow bag in a cool and dry location. All in one grow bags can keep for up to 3 months in these conditions. There will be no need to rehydrated or sterilize the products a second time. If you need to store the product longer it can be refrigerated for up to 6 months and frozen for up to 1 year.

How long does it take for cubensis to fruit? ›

Given proper humidity, temperature, and fresh air exchange, the substrate will produce fruiting Psilocybe cubensis bodies within a month of planting.

How much does a mushroom grow bag yield? ›

While some growers report harvests of 10-15 grams of dried mushrooms per pound of substrate in these bags, others might achieve less, often from significant side pinning, and especially in the case of contamination or suboptimal growing conditions.

How long do all in one grow bags last? ›

Grow bags are great for gardens of all sizes, both indoors and outdoors. You can start a plant in a smaller grow bag and move it to a larger grow bag as the plant reaches maturity. Grow bags are predicted to last 7 to 8 seasons, but with good care, they can last for much longer.

How do you increase mushroom yield? ›

If you want to grow more mushrooms simply give yourself more of the three “S's”: spores, substrate, and space. Having more substrate rich with inoculated mycelium will increase organic mass and potentially increase your mushroom production. Keep in mind that you'll need more surface area to accommodate it all.

Is mushroom farming profitable? ›

Mushroom farming has many benefits over traditional agriculture; it's environmentally friendly, sustainable, efficient with space usage, low labor costs (when done right), and can be profitable if well planned out for small-scale operations.

Is mushroom cultivation hard? ›

Is it difficult to grow mushrooms? Although it may seem tricky at first, once you understand the basics of growing mushrooms, the process is pretty simple! Take care to prevent contamination, monitor temperature and humidity, and you will be enjoying fresh, homegrown, gourmet mushrooms before you know it!

Why do mushroom farms fail? ›

Whether you're a hobbyist or commercial mushroom grower, the leading cause of crop failure is contamination. Contamination, or 'contam' in grower slang, is anything in your substrate or mycelium that negatively impacts your grow, and can include bacteria, molds, and animal pests.

What triggers mycelium growth? ›

During the colonization phase, the mycelium needs oxygen to grow and develop. The mycelium uses O2 to break down nutrients and convert them into energy that is needed for growth. Furthermore, O2 is also necessary for the fruiting phase of mushroom cultivation.

What is the lifespan of a mushroom? ›

Once mature, a mushroom can live from just a couple of days to many years. The mycelium network, once established, can last for hundreds, even thousands of years.

Where is the best place to put a mushroom grow bag? ›

All you need to do is keep your bag in a warm place inside your house. Between 20 to 24 C is an ideal temperature range. Luckily for most people, that's also around the ambient temperature inside your home.

How much does a mushroom bag yield? ›

While some growers report harvests of 10-15 grams of dried mushrooms per pound of substrate in these bags, others might achieve less, often from significant side pinning, and especially in the case of contamination or suboptimal growing conditions.

Should I mix my mushroom grow bag? ›

The Right Times To Shake Things Up

You can shake up your mushroom spawn bag when the mycelium has colonized about 40–50 percent of the spawn grain. As mentioned previously, this gives access to non-colonized patches of mycelium. You'll be surprised by how much this simple 30-second action can help your yield.

Why is my grain spawn bag not colonizing? ›

If your grain spawn is not colonizing, there could be several reasons. It could be a lack of moisture, too much moisture, inappropriate temperature, or contamination. It's essential to monitor your grain spawn regularly to catch any potential issues early on.
