What is Canned Chicken Noodle Soup?

Canned chicken noodle soup is fairly straightforward--it’s just chicken soup which has been put through a process similar to that of other products like canned spinach, canned peas, and canned tomatoes.

Once the soup is cooked, it is poured into sterilized, hot containers which are then vacuum sealed and heated. This process destroys any present microorganisms and renders the canned soups shelf stable for a long time--we’re talking years here!

What is Canned Chicken Noodle Soup Made From?

Most chicken noodle soups are made from the same base set of ingredients, typically containing the following: chicken broth or stock, chicken meat, carrots, celery, and onion. Some varieties opt to add herbs and seasonings to the mix, while others may work in some unique vegetable additions.

  • Best Classic Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Best Low Sodium Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Best High Protein Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Best Gluten Free Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Best Plant Based ‘Chicken’ Noodle Soup
  • Best Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Best Convenience Chicken Noodle Soup
  • Best All Around Chicken Noodle Soup

The Taste Test

Our soup test involved gently heating each chicken noodle soup according to package directions for stovetop cooking. The only exception to this preparation method was the “convenience” style soups, which were packaged in microwave-cooking specific containers, so we opted to use the microwave in those cases.

The Criteria

From data collected during the taste test and product research, we scored each best chicken noodle soup contender in each of the following 5 areas of critique:

  1. Taste & Texture: overall flavor and consistency of each soup as well as the texture of individual components like noodles, vegetables, and chicken.
  2. Nutrition Content: specifically considering calorie, fat, cholesterol, sodium, and protein contents as well as any additional vitamins and minerals. This category also evaluates the overall quality of ingredients used.
  3. Unique Characteristics: evaluating any special factors like unusual ingredients, flavors, or other notable characteristics that make one canned soup stand out from the others.
  4. Value: calculated to the price per ounce.
  5. Production & Packaging: including any special production methods, especially useful or appealing packaging decisions, or any distinctive characteristics of each soup company itself.

The criteria specific scores of each soup were then used to calculate an overall average rank which we used to determine the best chicken noodle soup of each of the aforementioned 8 categories!

Best Classic Chicken Noodle Soup:

Progresso Traditional Hearty Chicken & Rotini Soup

Size: 19-ounce can

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (2)

Here is how Progresso Traditional Hearty Chicken & Rotini Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 4.7 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 4.3 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.2 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.8 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0

Second only to Campbell’s, Progresso chicken noodle soups are probably among the most widely recognized, so we weren’t at all surprised when their Traditional Hearty Chicken & Rotini Soup turned out to be in our top picks!

Our tasting panel found this canned chicken soup to be deeply satisfying with large (and brilliantly orange!) carrot coins along with plenty of hearty and perfectly cooked rotini noodles. The broth itself has a deeply savory flavor as well as a broth texture that has a bit of viscosity to it, as opposed to being watery like some of the other soups we tested. We love that Progresso products are made in the USA and in the case of this soup, with white meat, antibiotic free chicken.

What it does have unfortunately, is a shocking amount of sodium. With 1,520 milligrams per serving, each portion of this soup is 66% your DV of sodium. Yeesh.

Also, in addition to those core ingredients of chicken broth, cooked white chicken meat, carrots and rotini pasta, there are actually a ton of other ingredients in this soup, many of which are highly processed and modified. And, those with food allergies should take note: this soup contains egg, soy, and wheat ingredients.

Pros:

  • Chock full of carrots, hearty noodles, and chicken pieces!
  • Has a more savory, richer flavor than many of the other soups we tasted.
  • Broth has a rich, somewhat thickened texture.
  • Made in the USA.
  • Made with white meat and antibiotic free chicken.

Cons:

  • Super high in sodium, with 1,520 milligrams per serving.
  • Contains several highly processed and modified ingredients.
  • Contains a few different allergens like soy, wheat, and eggs.

Best Low Sodium Chicken Noodle Soup:

Health Valley Organic Low-Sodium Chicken Noodle Soup

Size: 14.5-ounce can

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (3)

Here is how Health Valley Organic Low-Sodium Chicken Noodle Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.3 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0

Coming hot on the heels of our ‘Best Classic’ chicken soup, which has a dramatic dose of sodium in it, we’re tucking in this option from Health Valley as a delightfully low sodium alternative! The sodium content comes in at just 115 milligrams per serving and it is also the most ‘diet friendly’ soup we came across. It’s very low in both calories and fats with just 130 calories and 2 grams total fat per serving.

It is also USDA certified organic, American Heart Association certified, and packed in a non-BPA lined can. And, each serving of this soup provides 20% your DV of vitamin A! We love the realistic flavor of this soup--it honestly tastes like homemade chicken soup--as well as the approachable list of whole food ingredients on the label.

While it does taste nicely handcrafted as opposed to overly manufactured, this soup is definitely not the most flavorful option out there. The fact that it uses water as a base liquid as opposed to chicken stock or chicken broth results in soup that is both a bit thin as well as a bit bland. Youmay opt to season it with a bit more salt, which might seem like it defeats the purpose of its "low sodium-ness", but at least by adding your own salt you're in full control of the quantity and quality.

There also aren’t nearly as many goodies in this soup as compared to some others we tested, and we think it could certainly stand to benefit from a few more chicken pieces or veggies in the mix. The lack of chicken also makes this soup the one that is lowest in protein content, with just 7 grams per serving.

Pros:

  • Features the lowest sodium content of all canned chicken soups we tested, with just 115 milligrams per serving.
  • Very low in calories and total fat.
  • USDA organic.
  • Certified by the American Heart Association.
  • In a BPA free can.
  • Provides 20% of your DV of vitamin A.

Cons:

  • A bit lacking in overall flavor--you might want to add a bit more salt or seasonings of your own.
  • Has too much broth as compared to noodles, veggies, and chicken.
  • Protein content is unfortunately low.

Best High Protein Chicken Noodle Soup:

Pacific Foods Chicken Noodle Soup with Bone Broth

Size: 17-ounce carton

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (4)

Here is how Pacific Foods Chicken Noodle Soup with Bone Broth scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 4.6 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 4.4 / 4.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.6 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.7 / 5.0

Many folks reach for meat or poultry entrée options like chicken noodle soup as an attempt to get more protein into their diet and this bone broth base chicken noodle soup from Pacific Foods is just the ticket to help you reach your protein goals for the day!

Each serving of this super rich and roasty-toasty flavored chicken soup packs a full 18 grams of protein per serving. We also love that it is made with nutrient-dense bone broth as opposed to regular stock, broth, or water like many of the other canned soup options we tested.

The base set of soup ingredients (i.e., chicken, egg noodles, celery, carrots, and onion) is made all that much better by the addition of unique ingredients such as peas, garlic, and paprika. The noodles have a wonderful, perfectly al dente consistency and overall this soup offered a rich, supremely savory taste with complex flavor.

This soup is USDA certified organic and free from any GMO ingredients. And, we love that the folks at Pacific Foods (a brand also featured on our Best Oat Milk countdown!) are dedicated to giving back by offering meals and ingredients to schools and food pantries in need.

On the downside, Pacific Foods Chicken Noodle Soup with Bone Broth has the highest sugar content of all the canned chicken noodle soups we tested.

Also, for such a hearty soup, our tasting panel was of the opinion that the chicken cubes in this one are a bit off. They’re quite small in size and have a funny texture--more like processed chicken ‘product’ as opposed to the real roasted chicken you’d think this soup would be full of.

Pros:

  • Has the highest protein content of all soups we tested with 18 grams per serving.
  • Has a super deep, rich flavor and beautiful roasted coloring.
  • Made with real bone broth as opposed to less flavorful broth or stock.
  • Has a few unique ingredients in the mix such as green peas and paprika.
  • USDA organic and GMO free.
  • Company goes the extra mile to provide meals to people in need.

Cons:

  • Features a relatively high sugar content.
  • Chicken pieces are a bit funny--not that real-looking nor satisfying in texture.

Best Gluten Free Chicken Noodle Soup:

Annie's Gluten Free Chicken & Pasta Soup

Size: 14-ounce can

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (5)

Here is how Annie's Gluten Free Chicken & Pasta Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 3.9 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 4.4 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.4 / 5.0

One downside to chicken noodle soup as a food group is that those essential noodles typically contain wheat flour and therefore, gluten! This is problematic for many soup lovers out there and thankfully the folks at Annie’s set their hearts on solving that problem..

In addition to the fact that the pea flour-based noodles in their Gluten Free Chicken & Pasta Soup make it 100% gluten free, our tasting panel also loved the way the broth has a thick, super satisfying consistency. After looking at the ingredients list, we found that the soup has several different veggie purees mixed in like carrot puree, onion puree, and tomato paste. What an ingenious way to create a thicker soup while also adding flavor and staying away from any weird starches or gums!

There is also some excellent herb flavor in the form of parsley, rosemary, and thyme as well as other flavor boosters like onion powder, garlic powder, and black pepper oil--all of which give this soup a unique and homey taste. The soup also features antibiotic free chicken and is free from preservatives, synthetic colors, and artificial flavors.

If you’re gluten free, this soup is certainly a good option but unfortunately, the noodles themselves aren’t going to be winning any “best gluten free pasta” awards any time soon. Some of the noodles were reasonably tender and soft while others were actually quite tough and unpleasant--definitely not the vibe you’re looking for in a warm and cozy bowl of soup.

Also the pieces of chicken and vegetable are quite small here, more like minced little bits as opposed to hearty, satisfying pieces.

Pros:

  • Pasta noodles are made from pea flour, making them completely free from wheat and gluten.
  • Broth is thickened using a number of flavorful vegetable purees.
  • Already flavorful broth is boosted by ingredients like fresh herbs, black pepper oil, and plenty of seasonings.
  • Made with antibiotic free chicken.
  • No preservatives, synthetic colors, or artificial flavors.

Cons:

  • Some of the noodles have a funky, very tough texture.
  • Chicken and vegetable pieces are quite small and not at all hearty.

Best Plant Based ‘Chicken’ Noodle Soup:

Upton's Naturals Chick & Noodle Soup

Size: 14.5-ounce can

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (6)

Here is how Upton's Naturals Chick & Noodle Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 4.2 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 4.6 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.5 / 5.0

We were actually surprised--pleasantly so!--at the number of plant based canned ‘chicken’ soups out there on store shelves these days. Out of the few we sampled, this Chick & Noodle Soup from Upton's Naturals pulled into the lead, which makes a lot of sense seeing as this company has tons of experience making all kinds of prepared plant based fare like seitan, canned jackfruit, and more.

Instead of chicken, this certified plant based canned soup option is actually made with seitan--Upton's own blend of vital wheat gluten, chickpea flour, whole wheat flour, soy sauce, nutritional yeast, and spices. All of these savory ingredients give the ‘meat’ pieces a super tasty flavor and when paired with those super heft rotini noodles, this noodle soup option is a seriously stick-to-your-ribs choice.

There are also plenty of large chunks of fresh veggies as well as some lovely herb and spice content like rosemary, thyme, bay leaves, and white peppercorns. From a nutritional standpoint, we love that this soup has zero cholesterol (something you can’t really avoid with regular animal protein based soups) as well as provides 15% your DV of red blood cell-building iron.

On the downside, this soup has a base that is by no means a traditional broth. It actually has an overall kind of sweet flavor and is far less savory than what you might expect from a typical canned chicken noodle soup.

In addition, the ‘chick’ pieces are not the large chunks that are depicted on the can itself, rather, we found that most of the seitan crumbles into very small pieces as opposed to sticking together. This of course does not affect their flavor but makes the textural experience of the soup just a bit odd.

Pros:

  • From a company with tons of experience making vegan and vegetarian products.
  • Is certified plant based.
  • ‘Meat’ pieces are actually flavorful seitan--a mixture of wheat, chickpea flour, and seasonings.
  • Features extra large rotini noodles and large cut veggies for a super satisfying soup experience.
  • Zero cholesterol.
  • Provides 15% of your DV of iron.

Cons:

  • Overall flavor is a bit more sweet as opposed to savory like typical chicken soup.
  • Pieces of seitan tend to crumble into lots of smaller bits as opposed to staying together as depicted in the photo.

Best Homestyle Chicken Noodle Soup:

Rao's Slow Simmered Chicken Noodle Soup

Size: 16-ounce jar

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (7)

Here is how Rao's Slow Simmered Chicken Noodle Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 3.7 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.2 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0

If you haven’t yet given Rao’s products a shot, take this (plus the fact that they also scored a spot on our Best Pizza Sauce list) as your sign to do so! Throughout all of our product reviews, Rao’s consistently delivers high-quality, great tasting, authentic style prepared foods and their Slow Simmered Chicken Noodle Soup didn’t disappoint.

First things first, we love that this soup comes packed in a glass jar as opposed to a can or carton, allowing you to see what’s actually going on in there before you take it to the checkout line. Through the jar you can see soft and fluffy wide cut egg noodles and large pieces of fresh chicken inside the broth.

Once taste testing commenced, we came to love the light yet flavorful broth, laden with plenty of herb flavor from both fresh parsley and oregano--the latter of which is actually the secret star of the show if you ask us. The soup also contains richness-inducing ingredients like olive oil, chicken fat, and parmesan cheese which impart a seriously homemade feel to the soup itself. Each serving of this cozy yet craveable soup contains 17 grams of protein per serving as well as provides 20% your DV of potassium!

As you might be able to guess from all of those oils and cheese included in the mix, this soup is far from the healthiest. It has the highest content of calories, fats, and cholesterol, with 230 calories, 8 grams of fat, and 40 milligrams (almost 15% your DV!) of cholesterol per serving.

This soup is also the most expensive of all of the canned chicken noodle soups we tested as each jar costs 6 and a half bucks! This works out to $0.41 per ounce, which is nearly twice as much as the average price point we encountered.

And, though the flavor and quality of this soup made it the hands down favorite in terms of taste and texture, the real chicken chunks did have a slightly dry consistency due to the fact that they are made from all white meat chicken.

Pros:

  • Packed in a see through glass jar, allowing you to visually evaluate your soup before buying!
  • Filled with plenty of perfectly textured egg noodles, white meat chicken, and chunky veggies.
  • Is the taste/texture favorite among our tasting panel.
  • Addition of ingredients like oregano and parmesan cheese add a unique, special flavor to the soup.
  • Contains 17 grams of protein per serving.
  • Provides 20% DV of potassium.

Cons:

  • Very high in calorie, fat, and cholesterol content.
  • The most expensive soup we tested, costing $0.41 per ounce.
  • White meat chicken chunks are a bit dry.

Best Convenience Chicken Noodle Soup:

Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup

Size: 14-ounce bowl

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (8)

Here is how Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 4.4 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 4.8 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.3 / 5.0
  • Value: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 4.4 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.6 / 5.0

Canned soup may be heralded as the ultimate convenience food, but between the need for a can opener, soup pot, and cooktop, sometimes this stuff is just not all that convenient! Therefore we really dig this portable soup setup from Healthy Choice, which allows you to have a tasty bowl of soup using nothing more than a microwave--whether you’re in need of easy lunch options to take to work with you or a just want a quick and nourishing dinner at home.

The secret is in the small microwaveable bowl that once opened, you can use to heat the soup in as well as eat it out of! For the size of the container, there are big egg noodles aplenty as well as hearty pieces of celery and carrot--all of which have a nice texture and are not at all mushy. The broth itself is also deeply savory and the soup heated up perfectly according to the included microwave instructions.

Usually, food products that are packed for convenience tend to be even more expensive as compared to larger, bulk packaged items but in this case, our Healthy Choice Chicken Noodle Soup was actually the cheapest of all the chicken soups we tested. The container was just shy of $2.50, bringing the per ounce price to just $0.18.

Unfortunately, the convenience packaging could use juuuust a bit more finessing. First off, the container was far too full from the start, causing some spills when trying to open the pop top seal and transferring the bowl into the microwave. Also, the green plastic lid (which is intended to stay on during the microwave cooking) is surprisingly hard to remove--especially when the bowl is full of hot soup!

And while we loved the broth flavor and multitude of veggies and noodles, we wish there was more chicken in the mix.

Pros:

  • Soup is packaged in a small container which serves both as a microwaveable dish and a bowl to eat from!
  • Is portable and good for a meal on the go.
  • Plenty of big egg noodles and rustic veggies in the mix.
  • Broth is deeply savory without being overly salty.
  • Is the most affordable of all canned chicken noodle soups we tested.

Cons:

  • Packaging could use a few improvements as the lid is tough to remove and the container is filled so full.
  • Not enough chicken!

Best All Around Chicken Noodle Soup:

Campbell's Well Yes! Chicken Noodle Soup

Size: 16.2-ounce can

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup: Tasted and Reviewed. - Daring Kitchen (9)

Here is how Campbell's Well Yes! Chicken Noodle Soup scored in each of our criteria categories:

  • Taste & Texture: 5.0 / 5.0
  • Nutrition Content: 4.5 / 5.0
  • Unique Characteristics: 4.8 / 5.0
  • Value: 4.7 / 5.0
  • Production & Packaging: 4.7 / 5.0
  • Overall Score: 4.8 / 5.0

One canned chicken noodle soup that we simply couldn’t leave out from our batch of top pics is this version from Campbell's ‘Well Yes!’ line of soups. As opposed to the brand’s traditional soups, this Campbell's chicken noodle soup is far fresher tasting. It features real chunks of chicken, perfectly cooked thin egg noodles, and a tasty vegetable blend that includes some unique additions such as creamy white beans and nutrient dense diced tomatoes for some added freshness!

The bone broth base of this soup reads a bit thinner as compared to some of the other thickened soup broths we tasted, but our tasting panel quite enjoyed the juxtaposition of the lightweight broth when combined with the fully loaded nature of all the other ingredients.

This soup also offers solid nutrient content in the form 45% your DV of vitamin A, 10% your DV of potassium, and smaller quantities of iron and calcium. The label on the can was a crowd favorite as well, for the way it clearly depicts all of the wholesome ingredients that are included in the can of soup you’re about to enjoy--like a pictographic ingredients panel!

Our biggest complaint about this soup is the high cholesterol content which, like the Rao’s Homemade soup, is also hovering around 40 milligrams per serving. It’s also the second highest in sodium content with a full 1200 milligrams of the stuff per serving.

Pros:

  • Features a fresher taste and greater authenticity as compared to typical Campbell’s brand soups.
  • Contains nice chunks of real chicken and thinner, more delicate egg noodles.
  • Has some unique veggie additions like white beans and diced tomatoes.
  • Made with bone broth.
  • Provides good levels of a few different vitamins and minerals.
  • Packaging design is informative and inviting.

Cons:

  • High in both cholesterol and sodium--look out!

Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup FAQs

Is Canned Chicken Noodle Soup Good For You?

It depends! Make no mistake, all canned chicken noodle soup is considered to be a processed food item, but that said, some options are certainly better than others.

Canned chicken noodle soup--and most canned foods for that matter--is notoriously high in sodium content and also may be high in fat and cholesterol depending on the type of meat used and other ingredients. On the other hand, canned chicken noodle soup also typically offers a good dose of protein plus vitamins and minerals, and as it is broth based, is a relatively low calorie meal option that will leave you feeling satiated.

To optimize the health benefits of canned chicken noodle soup, look for low sodium, preservative free options that are made with white meat chicken and plenty of vegetables.

Is Canned Chicken Noodle Soup Good For When You’re Sick?

As mentioned above, some varieties of canned chicken noodle soup come with more health liabilities than benefits, so best to steer clear of those when you’re looking to soup as part of an illness-recovery regimen.

Healthier versions of canned soup, however, are indeed good choices for when you’re sick as they provide extra hydration, electrolytes, vitamins, and protein. In addition, chicken soup is more easily digested by systems under duress and the warmth of a bowl of soup can help ease congestion and soothe sore throats.

Do You Add Water to Canned Chicken Noodle Soup?

Generally speaking, most canned chicken noodle soups these days are ready to eat meaning you need to do nothing more than heat them up and enjoy! If your can of soup reads “condensed” however, this means the soup is a concentrated base and you will need to add water to your soup before heating in order to reconstitute it.

Just follow the directions on the label of your condensed soup in order to know how much water you need to add per can.

How Do You Upgrade Canned Chicken Noodle Soup?

If your canned chicken noodle soup isn’t tasting as good as you’d like, there are a few easy additions you can make to make it taste a bit better.

  • Chicken. Many canned soups are sadly lacking in the chicken department so add a handful of diced cooked chicken or shredded rotisserie chicken to bulk things up.
  • Veggies. Any cooked vegetables will do, whether you want more celery, onion, and carrot content or feel like a little something different! Try adding chopped roasted potatoes, rinsed canned beans, or any mixture of sautéed or roasted vegetables.
  • Fat. One thing that makes homemade soup so good is the fat content. If you’re looking for such luxury, stir a pat of butter into your soup once it is warmed through, or drizzle it with olive oil, or even a shower of rich parmesan cheese will do.
  • Herbs/Spices/Seasonings. Fresh herbs always jazz things up so try some minced fresh parsley or dill! Add red chili flakes for a punch of flavor or your favorite seasoning mix. Just be sure to watch the salt content here and if your canned soup is already very salty, stay away from any sodium heavy spice mixtures.

What Should I Serve With Canned Chicken Noodle Soup?

To make your bowl of chicken noodle soup a meal, you can always pair it with a warm griddled sandwich, wrap, or even a crisp refreshing salad salad.

If you’re looking for sides that are suitable for smothering and/or dunking though, try our Pumpkin Dinner Rolls, 4-Ingredient Puff Pastry Cheese Straws, or our Crispiest Baked Zucchini Chips. Or, for an extra easy yet perfectly delicious soup accompaniment, just drizzle a few slices of toasted bread with your favorite olive oil!

Ranking the Best Canned Chicken Noodle Soup Brands: The Takeaway

As you can see, canned chicken noodle soup has come a long way from that overly cooked, overly salted condensed stuff that used to dominate the soup aisles! There are tons of different choices now, from canned chicken noodle soups that have gluten free noodles or low sodium broths, to handcrafted, homemade-style chicken soup.
