These easy no chill sugar cookies are wonderfully soft on the side with slightly crisp edges and a sweet, buttery flavor. And along with being delicious, this recipe is just so convenient compared to regular sugar cookie recipes.

We all know how busy the holiday season can get, and the last thing you need is to wait for your sugar cookie dough to chill. Especially when you have the kiddos patiently waiting to decorate them!

Decorating sugar cookies is one of my family's favorite traditions. After I whip up this recipe, we all grab a differently shaped cookie, decorate it to the best of our abilities, and vote who has the best one.

So, not only are these cookies fun to decorate, but as I mentioned, they're so delicious too. With that iconic sugar cookie flavor and perfect texture, your family will have these cookies gone in a flash!

By the way, if you're looking for another dessert that's perfect for the holidays, you have to make these gingerbread cookies without molasses. They are also quite simple to make, and trust me, they are always a crowd pleaser.

Ingredients

Another reason to love this recipe is that these homemade sugar cookies are made with simple baking ingredients. Truth be told, you probably already have every ingredient in your pantry to make the best sugar cookie recipe!

Anyway, here's what you'll need to make this no chill sugar cookie recipe:

  • 2 sticks Cold Butter, cubed (salted butter or unsalted butter)
  • 1 cup Sugar
  • 1 Egg
  • 1 tsp. Vanilla Extract
  • 1 tsp. Baking Powder
  • ½ tsp. Salt
  • 3 cups Flour

And here's what you'll need for the icing recipe:

  • 1 cup Powdered Sugar
  • ½ tbsp. Water
  • 1 tbsp. Corn Syrup
  • Food coloring of your choice

See? That's it!

It's such an easy sugar cookie recipe, and it doesn't require any complicated ingredients. And you can use a lot of these same ingredients to make some equally delicious recipes like these no bake Christmas cookies and these small batch sugar cookies! They're two of my favorite Christmas cookies, along with these cut out ones.

Customizing Your Sugar Cookies

The best part about making sugar cookies is creating colorful icing for decorating the cookies. Atleast I think it is.

I like to make the royal icing with all of the ingredients above, and then pour it into about four or five individual bowls. Then, I'll add a different drop of food coloring to each bowl to switch up the colors of the cookies. I think doing this just makes decorating these no chill sugar cookies that much more fun!

Another fun part about this recipe is using different cut out shapes for the cookies! My family's favorite shapes to use are a Christmas tree, reindeer, Santa Claus, and candy cane shapes. They're so festive, and typically you can use all of the same colored icings for them!

Anyway, get creative and use any color icing and any cut out sugar cookie shapes that you want!

How to Make No Chill Cut Out Sugar Cookies

So, this process should take you about 30 minutes from start to finish. And it will make about 12 cookies, so if you want more, just double or triple the recipe.

Now, get your ingredients ready, and let's get into baking these Christmas sugar cookies!

Step 1: Cream the Butter and Sugar

To start, preheat your oven to 350°F (180°C) and line a baking tray - or two - with parchment paper.

Next, in a large bowl with a stand mixer - or electric mixer - mix the butter and sugar until the consistency is creamy and light in color.

Step 2: Add Wet Ingredients

Next, you're going to add the egg and vanilla extract to the bowl of creamed butter and sugar.

Then, mix everything together until the ingredients are well incorporated.

Step 3: Add Dry Ingredients

Now, in a separate bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, and salt.

Then, add the flour mixture into the large bowl with the creamed butter mixture. With a spatula, mix the ingredients until you get a cookie dough consistency.

Step 4: Roll Out The Cookie Dough

Once the cookie dough is just combined, divide the mixture into 2 round balls. Again, you don't have to chill the dough, so you can jump right into shaping and baking the cookies!

Anyway, sprinkle your countertop - or a flat working surface - with some flour. Next, roll each ball of dough out on the floured surface until it's about ⅓ inch thick.

Step 5: Cut Out The Sugar Cookies

Since you don't have to chill the dough, you can immediately use a cookie cutter on the rolled dough to cut out the soft sugar cookies! And, as I mentioned earlier, feel free to use various cookie cutters to cut it into your desired shapes.

Once you cut out about 12 cookies with the cookie cutters - or more if you doubled or tripled the recipe - place each cookie onto the prepared baking sheets.

You will have to bake the cookies in batches depending on the size of your baking sheets.

Step 6: Bake The Cut Out Sugar Cookies

Now that the cookie dough is ready, bake the cookies in the oven for about 10 minutes. For classic sugar cookies, they should have a light golden brown tint around the bottom edges. If you want soft sugar cookies, you can take them out around the 8-minute mark.

Anyway, once they are baked to your preference, take the baked cookies out of the oven and let them sit on the prepared baking sheet for 1-2 minutes. Then carefully transfer them to a cooling rack to cool completely.

Step 7: Prepare the Royal Icing

While the cookies are cooling, you can make the icing recipe (or frosting recipe)!

To make the sugar cookie frosting, mix the powdered sugar, corn syrup, and water - or milk - in a medium-sized bowl until they combine and form a smooth icing. If the icing is too thick, just add more milk. And if it's too thin, add more powdered sugar.

Then, if you want different colored icing, transfer some of the icing to individual small bowls and add drops of food coloring until it reaches your desired color.

Step 8: Decorate the Sugar Cookies

Now it's time for the fun part. Once the sugar cookies have cooled completely, you can decorate them however you want!

I like using cake decorating paintbrushes so I can add little details to each cookie. But you can also use a piping bag - or Ziploc bag with the corner cut - to drizzle the icing on the cookies.

Once your family decorates all of the cookies, let the icing set for a few minutes.

Then, finally, transfer the sugar cookies to a serving plate, and you have a festive plate of decorated sugar cookies that are just as satisfying to look at as they are to eat. Enjoy!

How to Store Frosted Sugar Cookies

This recipe for sugar cookies cut out cookies will make about 12 cookies. Since these cookies are typically served for the holidays, odds are your friends and family won't leave any! But, if they do, you can store the frosted sugar cookies to enjoy throughout the week.

You'll want to store the frosted sugar cookies in multiple airtight containers so the cookies can lay flat. This way, the icing won't be affected. You can then keep the cookies in the fridge for about 3 days.

How To Store Unfrosted Sugar Cookies

If you want to bake the sugar cookies ahead of time, you can totally store them whenever you need them! They'll taste just as delicious as the day you baked cookies.

You can store the unfrosted sugar cookies in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week. And if you want to make them even further ahead of time, you can store the cookies in the refrigerator for 2 weeks.

By the way, if you want to keep the cookie for even longer, you can freeze baked cookies in an airtight container for up to 6 months. The baked cookies freeze best without the icing, then you can let them thaw in the fridge or at room temperature before enjoying them.

Then, whenever you're ready to decorate sugar cookies again, just whip up the icing and let the fun begin!
