FAQ

What are cake mix cookies?

Cake mix cookies are cookies that are made primarily with cake mix rather than a flour mixture.

What is the texture of cake mix cookies?

Unsurprisingly, cake mix cookies have a cake-like texture. Although they aren’t crumbly like a cake, they do have a soft, chewy texture.

Why are my cookies too soft in the middle?

These cookies need to cool on the cookie sheet so carry-over cooking time can continue baking them to perfection. If you remove them too soon, the middle of your cookies will be underdone.

FAQs

Do you put sprinkles on before or after baking cookies? ›

If you want to add sprinkles to cookies, cupcakes, breads, or cakes before baking, that is totally and completely ok. Add sprinkles to the tops of these baked goods right before they go into the oven. Adding sprinkles to “wet” batter is the only way to get them to stick without an additional “glue” like frosting.

How do you make sprinkles stick to sugar cookies? ›

Make an egg wash—add pasteurized egg whites and a splash of water to a small bowl and mix with a fork until combined. Brush the tops of the cooled cookies with the egg wash and immediately add sprinkles.

Can you freeze sugar cookies with sprinkles? ›

Avoid freezing cookies if they are decorated with colored sugars or sprinkles unless you are SURE they are freezer safe. TEST FIRST. If they are frozen with color on them, the color may bleed. If this happened, know that the cookies are technically still good to eat, just less attractive.

What makes cookie spread? ›

Cookies spread because the fat in the cookie dough melts in the oven. If there isn't enough flour to hold that melted fat, the cookies will over-spread. Spoon and level that flour or, better yet, weigh your flour.

How do you get sprinkles to stick to cookies before baking? ›

When you roll the cookie in sprinkles, make sure the dough is not super chilled so the dough is slightly sticky. This will sort of glue the sprinkles to the cookies. You can also lightly press the sprinkles into the cookies. If you need to chill the dough, chill the dough AFTER you sprinklefy it.

How do you get sprinkles to stick to cookies without icing? ›

There are a couple of simple ways that you can do to help those sprinkles stick. The easiest thing to do is to brush the tops of the cookies with a little bit of water or milk, to dampen the cookie dough. This will help the sprinkles stick without changing the appearance of the cookie.

How do you put decorations on sugar cookies? ›

Start by outlining the cookie with piping-consistency icing in any color you choose. Then, use flooding-consistency icing to fill the outlined area, starting by flooding around the edges and working your way towards the center. If the flooding is inconsistent in thickness, redistribute the wet icing with a toothpick.

How far in advance can I make decorated sugar cookies? ›

Decorated Sugar Cookies

If you decide to leave them in the fridge, they will last about a week, but keep in mind that it's best to eat them within the first three days. When it comes to the freezer, decorated sugar cookies can be kept there as long as undecorated ones, so about three months.

When should I add sprinkles to sugar cookies? ›

Dip cookie dough rounds in sprinkles or sugar before baking. On ungreased cookie sheet, place cookie dough rounds about 2 inches apart. Bake 12 to 16 minutes or until golden brown. Cool 2 minutes; remove from cookie sheet to cooling rack.

Can you freeze cookies in Ziploc bags? ›

After baking, allow cookies to cool completely. Place them in a single layer on a parchment-lined baking sheet to freeze them, then store them in a freezer-safe zip-top storage bag labeled with the name and date. Squeeze out extra air and place flat in the freezer. To save space, you can flat-stack freezer bags.

Should I use parchment paper when baking cookies? ›

Using parchment paper for baking cookies will enable them to bake more evenly, and the non-stick quality will also help prevent them from cracking or breaking when lifting them off the sheet.

Can I use parchment paper instead of ungreased cookie sheet? ›

It turns out MOST cookies turn out far more reliably when baked on parchment and without grease on the pan. There are two ways in which a greased pan may negatively affect your cookies: 1. The additional fats are likely to seep into your cookie and cause more spreading and less rise than desired.

Is it better to bake cookies on parchment paper or silicone mat? ›

THE ANSWER IS: PARCHMENT PAPER

I'm not saying parchment papers reign supreme over silicone mats in EVERY category. But when it comes to baking cookies, parchment paper is the clear winner.

Do sprinkles soften when baked? ›

Most sprinkles do not have an expiration date. They can be stored in a dry place and used for a long time. However, some varieties, like jimmies, may harden when stored for too long. These types of sprinkles can sometimes be softened by using heat from an oven.

Do you bake cookies before decorating? ›

The first step to making beautifully decorated cookies is making sure the cookies are completely cooled when you begin adding the icing. Play it safe by making it a two-day process: Bake the cookies one day, then decorate the next day.

How do you get sprinkles to stick to dry icing? ›

Before you add your sprinkles, lightly mist the frosting or glaze with a spray bottle filled with water. This will help the sprinkles adhere better.

Can you sprinkle sugar on top of cake before baking? ›

Even though there's already sugar inside the cake, the extra bit on the outside will add a hint of sweetness without making the cake too saccharine. A classic pound cake recipe calls for granulated sugar, so since you're already using it, you can easily sprinkle some on top.
